The gothic cathedral of Palma lays like a anchored ship at the border of the city
The enormous cathedral was begun in the year 1230, directly after the island was re-conquered from the Muslims, like a symbol of the power from the Catholic Church. The cornerstone was then laid on the exact place there the big Muslim mosque recently had been demolished. It was the Catalan king Jaume the first, that re-conquered the island after he had sailed from Salou with 20.000 men. After the change it was mostly private people that got land promised to them at the island.
The big church is decorated by the great modernist architect Antoni Gaudì. There are divided thoughts about his “crazy” style with twisted forging in a middle age cathedral. Come here and check it out!
