GREEKS and ROMANS – power in two different ways
To be short, you can say that the Phoenicians established several trade destinations (for example Cadix) at the Iberian Peninsula and after them the Greeks came and established some villages (for example Rosas- there SpainActive is working- and Empuries). General Hannibal from Kartago attacked the Greeks who got help from their allied, the Romans. There were several wars between the Phoenicians (that established Barcelona) and the Romans (that established Lisbon).
The Peninsula was later on ruled by the Romans during six centuries. Empuries is one of Spain’s nicest evidence of this part of the history. The picture shows the now 2500 years old village that from the beginning was Greek and later on Roman. Forget about Pompeii, this is a lot more exciting.
Spain was almost equal with Italy during some periods and was totally romanised. The great Roman leaders Trojan and Hadrian were both Spanish. The most important result from these centuries is the Latin language, the roman legal system, the dividing of Spain in administrative parts and the Christian religion.
